Millennium Posts erected
Miss Cheltenham visited Cheltenham Rugby Clubs impressive facilities on Thursday 18th June to assist with the assembly of the new “Millennium ” rugby posts, provided and sponsored by Club Stalwart Shaun Gilder of Gordon Gilder Transport.
Since the end of the season work has been on-going to form a new full size rugby pitch as part of the Rugby World Cup Legacy Programme.
Sophie assisted with the post installation and was on hand to provide advice and encouragement to assist players and ground staff during the tricky operation. Sophie added
it was a real honour to be involved with the Club as they form their new Senior Rugby Pitch at Newlands, the facilities are really beginning to take shape. It is clear to see that a lot of time and effort has been made and the new rugby posts are truly impressive. I learnt a lot about the long an proud history of the club and I look forward to being at the official opening of the new pitch on the 16th July . I am really excited about seeing the Rugby World Cup Trophy
John Woodward Club Historian was on hand to pass on some of the Clubs achievements and regaled stories of the Old Athletic Ground, the clubs move to the Prince of Wales and finally its purchase and ownership of the Newlands complex. John said
It is truly inspiring to see these facilities improve before your very eye’s. Obviously a huge amount of work is being done to get the club back to where it belongs, but the new pitch is wonderful and will be a credit to all our teams”
Shaun Gilder “Stan ” joined Cheltenham as a young player in 1994 from Smiths Rugby and has been an ever present for over 20 years, making 8 first team appearances last season and 221 in total, Shaun added,
these post are most impressive, however at my age (47) is unlikely I will be playing many more games on this pitch, it is huge, I just wish I was 10 years younger. But is it great to be able to assist the Club meet it ambitions and myself and the family are delighted to provide this fantastic lasting legacy “
Finally last seasons captain, and re-elected captain of the coming season, James Hillier, a former mini and junior player, colt and senior player for 3 seasons, who was chief organiser as a trained engineer during the erection process added
the boys are really impressed with the new pitch and the posts are fantastic, we are all looking forward to making this our permanent home, anyone interest in being part of this we play touch rugby on Monday evenings or pre season starts on Tueesday 30th June 7.0 prompt at Newlands
